NEWBERRY, S.C. — Fourth grade students from across the School District of Newberry County recently had the opportunity to experience the music, traditions and culture of Mexico through an interactive performance by Mariachi Herencia de México.

The educational concert was provided through the Newberry Opera House and Newberry Arts For All (NAFA) with support from the Dufford Series, continuing an effort to provide local students with meaningful arts and cultural experiences beyond the classroom.

During the performance, students enjoyed songs in both English and Spanish while learning about Mexican culture, vocabulary and the history and traditions of mariachi music. Students also learned about traditional mariachi attire and the instruments that create the genre’s distinctive sound. The interactive performance encouraged students to participate throughout the concert by clapping along and engaging with the musicians.

Mariachi Herencia de México is a Chicago-based ensemble that blends the traditions of mariachi music with contemporary influences. The group has earned two Latin Grammy nominations and has performed at venues across North America, including the Kennedy Center.

“Experiences like this give our students an opportunity to learn in ways that extend well beyond the walls of the classroom,” District Arts Coordinator Laura Clark said. “They directly support our Visual and Performing Arts standards by allowing students to respond to the arts and make meaningful connections to the world around them. Through music, students can explore different cultures, traditions and perspectives while connecting those experiences to their learning. We are incredibly grateful for the community partnerships that make these meaningful, standards-based opportunities possible for our students.”

The mission of Newberry Arts For All (NAFA) is to enrich the cultural and economic vitality of Newberry County and the Midlands by making the arts accessible to all. Through engaging performances, community outreach and meaningful educational opportunities, NAFA uses the arts as a powerful lens to inspire learning, foster creativity and build a more connected, vibrant community.

Programs such as the Mariachi Herencia de México performance reflect that mission by providing students with access to high-quality arts experiences while introducing them to cultures, traditions and perspectives from around the world.

The School District of Newberry County appreciates the continued partnership of the Newberry Opera House and Newberry Arts For All, along with the support of the Dufford Series, in creating opportunities that broaden students’ experiences and reinforce the important role the arts play in a well-rounded education.
